Wood Bat 2010 Print E-mail

The MBL will not have a Wood Bat Division for 2010.  Logistical and scheduling issues, along with the fact that Langsdorf and Lakes already provide a Wood Bat alternative for players looking for to play more baseball, guided us in the decision not to dilute the MBL.

However, Kirk Spano, Annex Wealth Managment and Wisquote.com will be sponsoring an MBL entry into the Langsdorf.  If you are interested in playing in both the MBL and Langsdorf please send an expression of interest via email ASAP.  Players eligible to try-out for the team must be among top MBL players, able to pay $100 player fee (refundable, but due at the MBL Awards Banquet October 4th) and be willing to help with a fundraiser and/or youth baseball camp.

See Langsdorf team article.

Sponsorship Offers

I have two potential sponsors for your MBL teams next year.

First is a bar on the southside near the airport.  The owner is willing to sponsor a team or two for up to $1000 based on patronage, with a few hundred up front for uniforms, and contributions throughout the season for regular attendance.  If your team is looking for a nice regular watering hole near the airport, get in contact with me.

Second is for all teams.  Wisquote Insurance Services, LLC, an independent insurance agency, will kick in $1 for every $4 in life insurance premium that your players or friends and family place with the (my) agency.  For example, if five guys all buy life insurance at about $400 per year each, for a total of $2000 in premium, your team will receive $500.

The Future of MBL

2010 marked a significant year for the Milwaukee Baseball League.  Now in our eighth season as an independent league after Milwaukee County ceased running adult baseball leagues, the MBL added a division for players age 25 and over and is working with Milwaukee County to resurface the infield at Zirkel Field in McCarty Park.  In general the league is healthy with a good group of volunteers managing it, has run a small surplus each year and maintains an emergency fund of several thousand dollars for unforseen events and issues.

Looking forward we see three divisions comprising the league on a long term basis: American Division, National Division and Veterans Division.

For 2011 the league will accept expansion teams, however, we will only allow up to 12 teams total in the MBL American/National divisions, and up to 12 teams in the Veterans division, for a maximum total of 24 teams.  It is likely that we hold those limits long term unless more fields become available.  New teams must have at least one $500 sponsor by our first league manager's meeting in January 2011 to secure a place in the league for 2011.  Teams should also have a reliable 15 man roster with a few fill-in players to cover when family commitments, vacations, work or weddings interfere with baseball.

Veterans Division 2010

The Milwaukee Baseball League has added a Veteran’s Division for 2010.  Currently there are five teams in the division.  In 2011 we expect to add 3 to 7 teams to the division including one internally from one of the other MBL divisions.

The league is composed primarily of MBL veteran players who are seeking to extend their baseball career well into their 30s.  The league is designed to be competitive while providing a gentlemanly recreational outlet.  The division will play Sundays, with some Thursdays and Fridays (more for teams that would like to have their Saturday/Sunday off a couple times per year for other endeavors).

Managers of teams or groups who would like to be considered being added to the league please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   ASAP.

Leff's Lucky Town Americans 10 Town and Lake Realty Braves 4
In game one of a doubleheader that Leff's needed to sweep to get back into the playoff race, Jared Catenacci, John Kuhn and Alex Rejniak got Leff's on the board early with 2 runs in the first inning. Catenacci was hit with the first pitch and John Kuhn followed with a single. Rejniak with two outs then hit a single scoring both runners after John Kuhn's steal. The Braves got one in their half of the first, but that would be their last meaningful challenge as Leff's defense made the key plays, led by Steve Gustafason in centerfield and Aaron Bielawski at second base.  Leff's added two runs in the second and three in the third as Rob Tschimperle, Jeremy Kroll and Jarrett Gates all contributed hits.  In the sixth, Mike Schroeder helped his pitching cause with his second homer of the season, an exclamation point 380 foot home run which drove in John Kuhn after Kuhn's 3rd hit of the day, a double to the wall.

Schroeder worked a game plan to perfection controlling the game on his way to the victory, while dealing with symptoms of the heat which caused him to be sick and need ice packs.  Rejniak pitched a final scoreless inning.  Catenacci went 2-4, 4r, bi; John Kuhn 4-4, 3r, 2bi and Rejniak 3-4, 3bi.  Adam Graves had two hits for the Braves, while three other Braves were ejected.

Leff's Lucky Town Americans 3 Town and Lake Realty Braves 1
In game two of a key doubleheader, Leff's pitcher Rob Tschimperle pitched a gutty game, allowing only three hits in six innings en route to the sweep of the Brave's. The defense behind him got the job done in the middle innings until Tschimperle asserted himself strongly in the fifth and sixth getting five strikeouts over those two innings. In the sixth, "Chimp" recorded three of those strikeouts, including of a Braves pinch hitter.  Alex Rejniak pitched a scoreless final inning getting the save, with two strikeouts including striking out the final hitter on a nasty breaking ball.  Jared Catenacci had two hits and a run scored for Leff's.  Rejniak had the game winning RBI.
